Tips for Winter Fly Fishing
Most anglers pack it in when the weather gets to be too cold. However, if you’re willing to brave the elements, winter fly fishing can be worthwhile. If you’re looking to go fishing on the river or stream during the winter, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. This article will give you a few tips.
Clothing
Wearing proper clothing is extremely important when fly fishing during the winter. You need to stay as dry and warm as possible. You also need to wear an appropriate hat so that you don’t lose body heat from your head. It’s always a good idea to bring a change of clothes with you in case you get wet. A pocket hand warmer and/or a pair of good gloves should also be on your list.
Waders
Many anglers make the mistake of using summer waders when winter fly fishing. If water comes into contact with your body, it will quickly transfer away heat. Therefore, you need a pair of waders that are completely watertight. Since you should have on multiple pairs of socks, your wading shoes need to be slightly bigger than you’d normally wear during the summer.
Ice
During colder weather, ice can definitely become a problem. If you fish during the winter long enough, you will probably get ice on your guides. This will make it very difficult for you to cast properly. If this happens, you can simply dip it into the water to get rid of any ice that forms on the guides.
