I live near and fish the Susquehanna. I/we prefer live bait for bass. Best bait for smallmouths are stonecats/blue eyes. same thing, different name.
A fishing pole/rod.
How about fly fishing on the idea and you may have good luck on it too.
Black rooster tails are a great smallmouth lure in the Susky.
Also: Mepps black furys with either the orange or yellow tail.
I found out recently how deadly tube baits (3.5″) are for smallies there as well. A rebel crayfish and a flatfish or lazy ike always catches fish i n the river. Yellow Mr. Twisters (4″) are also a staple.
